Urinary tract infection: why is it more common in summer?

2023. Jul 25. | Urogin

The risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) increases significantly in the summer – in this article we investigate the reasons for this.

Urinary tract infections are more common in summer, not only among women but also among men for several reasons. For example, swimming significantly increases the risk of UTIs, and many people experience unpleasant symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, painful urination, frequent urges to urinate and malaise.

Summer heat and high humidity create perfect conditions for pathogens, and cystitis is significantly more common in summer than in winter. In addition, we lose much more fluids through sweating, i.e. we urinate less often, which also encourages pathogens to reach the bladder and cause the symptoms mentioned above.

How to prevent urinary tract infections?

  • Proper hydration: Drink at least 2-2.5 litres of water a day since frequent urination can help to flush out the urinary tract. Avoid coffee and alcohol, as they are both dehydrate and can irritate the bladder.
  • Breathable clothing: Wear underwear made of breathable fabrics and, after swimming, take off your wet swimsuit as soon as possible.

If you do get UTIs, please see a urologist, however in milder cases, use Urogin tincture to cure it.
