When dealing with a urinary tract infection (UTI), the first step is to drink plenty of fluids, as more frequent urination helps flush bacteria out of the urinary tract. It is advisable to avoid coffee, alcohol, and excessive sugar. In cases of urinary tract infections, Urogin oral solution, containing extracts of six medicinal herbs, may also be used as a traditional herbal medicine.
Why Do Urinary Tract Infections Develop?
Urinary tract infections are usually caused by bacteria, most commonly E. coli. Their symptoms include a frequent urge to urinate, a burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain. Risk factors include insufficient fluid intake, holding urine, exposure to cold, and menopause.
What Should You Drink for a UTI?
Water is the most important choice. A 2018 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine included 140 premenopausal women with recurrent UTIs who drank insufficient amounts of water. Those who drank an additional 1.5 liters of water daily experienced an average of 1.7 episodes over one year, compared with 3.2 episodes in the control group.
Diuretic Herbal Teas
Nettle leaf, birch leaf, and horsetail teas have traditionally been used to help flush the urinary tract. If you have severe heart or kidney disease that requires fluid restriction, do not consume these teas without medical advice.
Coffee and Alcohol During a UTI
According to the UK’s NHS, coffee, alcohol, and fruit juices can irritate the bladder, so it is best to avoid them while experiencing symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
UTI Diet: What Should You Pay Attention To?
A few dietary habits may be worth changing.
- Sugar: Reduce sugary foods and drinks, as they may promote bacterial growth.
- Vitamin C for UTIs: Research findings are inconsistent. Since vitamin C can acidify urine, take it alongside Urogin only on the advice of your pharmacist.
- Probiotics for UTIs: According to the European Association of Urology, there is not yet sufficient evidence regarding the appropriate dosage and duration of use.
Urogin for Urinary Tract Infections
Urogin may be used to treat mild urinary tract infections, cystitis caused by exposure to cold, and urinary tract inflammation, either on its own or as a complementary treatment. Its natural active ingredients include extracts of bearberry leaf, agrimony, yarrow, nettle leaf, birch leaf, and field horsetail.

How Should It Be Taken?
- Shake well before use. Take 10 ml three times daily, diluted in 200–300 ml of water or tea (the recommended dose for adults and those over 14 years of age). This alone provides an additional 600–900 ml of fluid per day.
- Continue taking it until symptoms resolve, but for at least 3 days. Prolonged use is not recommended.
- If your symptoms have not improved after 7 days, seek medical advice.
What Should You Be Aware Of?
Urogin contains alcohol: 2.23 g per 10 ml. It must not be used in cases of allergy, liver disease, alcoholism, epilepsy, brain injury, or other central nervous system disorders, or together with urine-acidifying medicines. It may enhance the effects of diuretic medicines.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Urogin. As there is insufficient information on its safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, its use is not recommended as a precaution. Due to its alcohol content, Urogin is not recommended for children under 14 years of age.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Seek medical attention promptly if you experience fever, chills, back pain below the ribs, vomiting, or blood in your urine, as these may indicate a kidney infection.
You should also consult a doctor if you are pregnant, if you are male, or if your UTIs recur frequently.
