Juvenile warts<\/strong>, also known as flat warts (verruca plana juvenilis), are skin lesions caused by the human papillomavirus<\/strong> (HPV). They are most common among children and young people, which is where its name comes from. They can spread rapidly across the skin, especially due to scratching or, in adolescents, shaving.<\/p>\n

Juvenile warts are flat, smooth-surfaced, slightly raised skin lesions, usually skin-coloured, yellowish, or slightly brownish. They most commonly appear on the backs of the hands, forearms, face, and legs. They typically develop on exposed skin areas prone to minor injuries, abrasions, or scratches.<\/p>\n

The virus enters the body through micro\u2011injuries in the skin. Warts often appear in groups, clustered together in many small, closely spaced lesions – sometimes even dozens. They may also appear in a linear pattern along scratch marks, appearing further away from the original entry point.<\/p>\n

Moist environments – such as swimming pools, changing rooms, and showers -provide favourable conditions for the development and spread of juvenile warts. In these environments, the skin becomes softened, increasing the likelihood of microscopic injuries that facilitate HPV entry. Infected skin cells shed into pool or beach water, and from there, viruses can enter healthy skin through tiny injuries, infecting new hosts. Under favourable conditions, the virus begins to multiply rapidly at the point of entry, leading to wart formation.<\/p>\n

Transmission can also occur through direct skin-to-skin contact, even via a handshake or during play. The virus may also spread through contaminated objects such as towels, razors, sports equipment, or cosmetic tools.<\/p>\n

The development of warts is strongly influenced by the current state of the immune system.<\/p>\n
